The Iford Library Step Chair

The Iford Library Step Chair is my take on the metamorphic library steps which were first built in the mid-18th century for the private libraries and offices of the European nobility or the Bourgeoisie. It is intriguingly classified as ‘mechanical furniture’. I kept finding himself arriving at someones house only to find one of these chairs sitting proudly in a corner, often covered in books. He noticed that the owners of these chair were all very different, with often opposing taste in furniture, yet the charm and character of this dual use piece of furniture seemed to appeal to this unexpectedly broad range of people.

We saw the step chair in the LRB. Thought it looked right for our purposes but wanted to see the actual step chair. Wondered about Bradford on Avon: worth a drive to visit Charlie? After a gander on the internet we ended up booking a week there. Phoned Charlie, who very kindly picked us up from our holiday cottage and brought us to his house and workshop. Yep, the chair was exactly what we had been looking for. After an introduction to his daft dog and a coffee we discussed the details and lo the step chair arrived before Xmas. The aluminum stepladder it replaces now languishes in the garage.

This is an elegant simple, Shaker- style chair, reminiscent of old church pew chairs in design, ideal for a bedroom ,kitchen study , playroom or hall, with the wonderful bonus of turning itself into safe and useful set of steps . We love ours in ash wood.

I received the chair this past week which was shipped across the pond to New York – it’s just what I wanted. Wonderful!

Once I get my book case set up I’ll be able to reach the top shelf and we have high cabinets above refrigerator that allows me to reach can goods and food stuff that are in the back reaches.

It was worth the wait. Many thanks. Glad that I saw your ad in the London Review of Books.
